FLORENCE, Ala. -- International spoken word artist and award-winning poet Gabriela Garcia Medina is scheduled to perform her artistic works at the University of North Alabama Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Guillot University Performance Center. Admission to the event is free. Medina has traveled across the globe to perform her slam poetry in several countries, including Switzerland, Cuba, South Africa and Brazil. She has toured across the U.S. by visiting colleges, festivals and conferences to share her work with others. She has also performed in nationally televised campaigns for Toyota and Dove, as well as done national tours for her book, "Ink-Scribing Oshun," since 2006. The Feb. 28 event, sponsored by the University Program Council, will be Medina's first visit to UNA. David Johnson, spirit chairman for the UPC branch of the Student Government Association, said Medina's poetry is very personal to her and she often discusses topics that she is passionate about, including her Cuban descent and female empowerment. "She is very energetic and spunky," Johnson said. "Everyone can relate." For more information, contact the Office of Student Engagement at 256-765-4248.
